What is the VAT number in the US?

A value-added tax number VAT is an identification number for Value-Added Tax that businesses use to report and track VAT. VAT is a consumption tax applied by many countries. The United States doesn't impose VAT on goods or services. Instead, it relies on the sales tax system, which is different in each state and collected at the time of purchase. The U.S. doesn't issue businesses VAT numbers.

Taxes on goods and services (VAT) vs. US Sales Tax

  1. VAT: Taxes that are applied to each phase of production or distribution. Businesses can reclaim the VAT paid for inputs. The system is widely used throughout Europe.
  2. Sale Tax In the U.S., states only apply sales tax at the point of final sale. In the U.S., businesses need either a certificate of sales tax (depending on the state) or a reseller's certificate.

U.S. International Businesses

The U.S. does not have a system of VAT. Businesses selling products or services overseas may have to register with the VAT system in each country. To comply with tax laws, businesses selling goods or services to European Union customers may need to obtain a VAT number.
